National Gallery of Ireland: The Boar
National Gallery of Ireland: The Boar
My friend Doireann grew up in Dublin and was fixated with The Death of Adonis as a child visiting the gallery. She’d ask her parents to retell the myth over and over: how Adonis was killed by a wild boar during a hunting trip and died in the arms of Aphrodite.
Doireann says she was fascinated and terrified by the boar fleeing the scene in the bottom left, and used to see him everywhere. Returning as an adult, she found it funny how small and playful the boar actually is - not the shadowy monster she turned him into when she was small.
I loved this story and what it says about art appreciation. Even in grand spaces, when an image or story takes root in you, it becomes yours. Take this lil guy along with you as inspiration and look for the details to make your own.
