Mink Loves: Facing Heaven
Mink Loves: Facing Heaven
I made these pins for my favourite restaurant in London. Facing Heaven is a vegan Sichuan neighbourhood diner that looks like Twin Peaks crossed with an 80s music video, and tastes as good as its name. I've been every month, as well as its adjoining bar Easy8, since first going to a birthday there a year ago. Both are the creation of genius chef and prince of Mare Street, Julian Denis ~ and I wanted the pin set to match not only the vibe of the restaurant but also Julian's v distinctive style.
As someone who loves theatre, I feel like these two very special venues are comparable to the experience of a show: a space that lives and hosts people and experiences rather than a singular creation. After taking another group of friends there, I realised that every time I've attended there's been at least a moment where everyone is so wowed by the flavours that there's a collective silence, a shared speechless experience. That's theatre!
Designing these was a brilliant challenge ~ I wanted them to feel like vintage pins you'd fish out of an antique shop or market stall. To get them to look aged, I used a paler gold enamel than usual, stranger colours, thinner lines that are almost breaking, and a layer of epoxy on top that was common in pins from the 80s & 90s. You can buy the Badge of Dishonour & HK French Toast in the restaurant or right here 🌹 Also try the food.
