Picturehouse x Mink: Duke of York's (Not for Sale)
Available to buy in person at the Duke of York’s or online here.
Last year, Picturehouse sent me to Brighton to visit the Duke of York's, the oldest purpose-built cinema in the UK, to think about making a piece of memorabilia! As far as research goes, this was obviously a dream day for me. I got to explore the inner workings of the cinema while hearing about its amazing history and literal ghosts.
There was an obvious choice for the design: in 1991, these 20 foot high can-can dancer’s legs were placed atop the front balcony. Originally designed by sculptor John Buckley for Not The Moulin Rouge in Oxford, they have since been moved to the roof as a beacon for cinema lovers far and wide.
The pin on its own didn’t feel like a thorough enough tribute to the Grade II listed building, so I made an elaborate backing card of the outside facade. On the inside is a little history lesson, alongside a photo I took of the tiles on the lobby steps. I loved trying to take in of as many of the cinemas’ details and textures as I could, and finding ways to include them in the design.
Other highlights (that I couldn’t fit in) were the button that opens the beautiful curtains from the projection booth, and the wheel you turn to adjust the aspect ratio of the screen. Who knew!
Thanks to Sam Harris, Hope Hopkinson, Sam Clements & Lily Otton for this dream project. Go Picturehouse!
